Transgenders up in arms

IMPHAL, 28 OCT: The All Manipur Nupi Manbi Association (AMANA), the apex body of the Transgender in Manipur feels the phrase “neither male nor female” which was used by the 17 women’s organizations in a press meet on 26th of October as an indication of their discrimination towards the transgender community.

 A press release signed by Santa Khurai, Secretary of AMANA, said that it could be appreciated if the women’s organizations used the conventional term which is accepted through out the world instead of using that phrase while mentioning the community. The press release says that they too are the offspring of a mother and they are also raised up in the soil of this state. So “do not keep us aside from the society in making decisions, and developmental consultations” the statement added.

 The statement further says that the transgender community regards the decision of the women organizations to ban the Miss Manipur Contest and clarifies that there was no such cases of designing any dress which is objectionable. It will be a harsh decision if the organizations impose any kind of prohibition to the professions of the community. sns
