Melodious but trendy

10 November 2012

Shreepritam speaks to sudipta chanda about his upcoming venture, Idiot

 The album…
It features five tracks covering different genres ~ upbeat (upbeat Heabby Lagchhe), folk (Paagli), romance (Jhar Othe Mone and Sajna Paas Aa). I have penned all the songs and they have been rendered by Zubin, Akriti, Mahalaxmi and Shaan.

USP of the album…
It is full of energy, romance and melody.

Big break…
Idiot was my first film but it is releasing now. I bagged Bikram Singh while working on the soundtrack for Idiot. Bumbada, Rajib, Shrabanti and Himanshu liked my compositions. I had also composed Guti Guti Paye while my studio albums were being released by Prime Music. Earlier, I had recorded two albums ~ Chalo Durey (2005) and Shudhu Tumi (2007). The first time I met Rajib was when he did a music video for one of my songs. Gradually, I started approaching Rajib often. Meanwhile, I had assisted Rajib on  a few ventures, and even acted in a few.

Inspiration…
My brother Prasenjit Banerjee is my first teacher. Later I started learning from Pandit Ajay Chakraborty, Kalyan Sen Barat and Subhendu Maity. I grew up listening to compositions by Bappi Lahiri. I also admire Viju Shah programming. Among singers, I idolise Kishore Kumar, Kumar Sanu and Indranil Sen.

Name game…
My real name is Pritam Banerjee. It was Bappi Lahiri who suggested the name Shreepritam. Since we already have a Pritam, my original name would have created a confusion..

Favourite musical instruments…
I play the keyboard. I prefer composing on the harmonium and the keyboard.

Besides music…
I write my lyrics. Bumbada, Rajib, Himanshu and Shrabanti have all encouraged me to do so. I usually compose a tune with “dummy” words. There are times when producers keep my lyrics intact.

New-age music…

It is “technically smart”. Sound designers are doing a mind-blowing job. On the note of melody and meaningful lyrics, the golden age has passed.

Next up…
I am working on Rajib’s next directorial venture and one for Eskay Movies. I have also composed a jingle for Virtue Gold in which Shrabanti appears.
