Arjun Chakraborty talks about his debut Bengali film, Bapi Bari Jaa
The role…
Bapi, a college student, belongs to a rich family and is a bit confused about his future. He has never seen poverty, does not know the value of hard-earned money. Besides, he is irresponsible and none too under confident. The story revolves around a group of six friends. Bapi Bari Ja is a common phrase we generally use to make a fun of one’s disability.
It’s a youthful film to which today’s young generation can relate. It’s all about the general character of that particular age — their problems, happiness, love and so on. I have hardly seen Bengali films in recent times, so I am not able to say how different it is from the rest. I don’t consider it to be a path-breaking film but the story, music, all have their own charm.
Prasenjit as producer…
Be it Gaaner Oparey or Bapi Bari Jaa, he had always been supportive of quality work. I would say I found him to be a good friend. He never even came to the floor, knowing that doing so would draw more attention than our work. He never fails to suggest tips to improve my acting.
Preparation for the role…
Whether it was Gora or Bapi, I had worked hard on both the characters as both had huge differences. Though I would say I am closer to Bapi, character wise. Finally, there was a workshop that helped us a lot.
Music…
Music plays a key role in this film. Jeet Ganguly’s music does not need any introduction.
It deals with a wide range of artistes, genre of music, among them Sajna Barse (Rashid Khan) is a personal favourite. On a whole, it is a very versatile album.
Target audience…
It is meant for both youth and their parents. It deals with certain suggestions meant for the parents, too.
Dream roles…
The script would have to be interesting. I am a fanatic of action films. I would love to deal with such roles if there is any scope of applying the brain. On the other hand, I dream of playing a role like Feluda.
What’s next?
There is one a Bengali film, Aschhe Bachhor Abar Hobey, in the pipeline. I am paired with Ritwika Sen in this Sushanta Das directed venture.
