RAIGANJ, 3 DEC: Tension gripped a locality after a Congress worker, Muhammad Khalek (35), a resident of Aambari in Goalpokhar, was stabbed to death by hoodlums on the Lodhan hospital premises in the Goalpokhar police station area of North Dinajpur district this morning.
While the Congress charged that the CPI(M) goons had killed him, the CPI(M) claimed there was a clash between two group of Congress members in which Muhammad Khalek was killed. Later, both the parties lay the blame on Goalpokhar police for the killing.
A clash ensued at 8.30 a.m. between two groups of villagers at Aambari in Goalpokhar in which four Congress members were injured. Both the groups went to Goalpokhar police station to register complaint against each other. Police suggested both groups to undergo a medical test before registration of complaints. When both the groups turned up at Lodhan hospital a clash took place between them during which Muhammad Khalek was stabbed to death.
The Congress MLA for Goalpokhar, Mr Golam Robbani, said: "Muhammadd Khalek was a Congress member. This morning one Hamidul Rahaman, a CPI(M) member, along with some hoodlums taunted Md Khalek. When he along with some Congress members protested they attacked our members. Then both the groups went to Goalpokhar police station to register complaint. The O-C Goalpokhar police station instructed both the parties to have a medical test. On the other hand, the O-C, Goalpokhar police station, Mr Wahab Molla, was responsible for the killing. We condemn the killing and demand punishment against police. In order to hide their members the Congress leaders are blaming the CPI(M)."
