KOLKATA, 7 DEC: In a brutal honour killing, a 29-year-old youth chopped off his sister's head for eloping with a person after deserting her husband and children.

He roamed around the place for more than 15 minutes with the head in his hand, apparently to convey to other women that they will face a similar punishment if they follow his sister's path, before finally surrendering  at the Nadial police station.

Police said the victim, Nilofar Bibi, who married a trader in Rabindranagar eight years ago have two children, left her in-laws and started staying in her father's house on Dr AK Road at Nadial. On 28 November, she fled with Firoz, a rickshaw puller. They took shelter at the residence of Firoz's brother at Ayubnagar. The victim's father had lodged a missing person complaint a couple of days ago at the Nadial police station, but police could not trace her.

This morning, the victim's brother, Mehtab Alam came to know that his sister is staying with Firoz somewhere at Ayubnagar, which is also under the jurisdiction of the Nadial police station. He went to the place and after talking with local people located the house where Nilofar was staying.

He was carrying a dagger. As soon as he found her sister inside the house, he attempted to kill her. Firoz and his brother were not in home but Firoz's  sister-in-law, Sabbu tried to stop Mehtab from killing his sister.

Sabbu was repeatedly stabbed by Mehtab Alam in the arm. She fell down, bleeding profusely.  Later, she was admitted to SSKM hospital.

Mehtab then caught his sister's hair and dragger her out of the house on to the road. People saw him holding his sister in one hand and a dagger in the other. Before they could intervene, Mehtab chopped off his sister's head.

Leaving the beheaded body outside the gate of Firoz's house, he roamed the area holding the head then went to Nadial Police station.

He threatened people with dire consequences if they try to catch him and at the same time declared that he will surrender himself immediately.

He was arrested as soon as he went to the police station and confessed his guilt.

Mr Pallav Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (crime), said before dragging his sister out of Firoz's house, Mehtab told Firoz's father that his sister had made a big mistake and he will punish her for it.
