KOLKATA, 13 DEC: The Union IT ministry has conveyed its inability to extend the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) scheme for West Bengal, which the state government wanted as an alternative to Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status to software giant Infosys in Kolkata.
In the course of a discussion in the Assembly today, industries minister Partha Chatterjee said in view of the state government’s opposition to SEZs, it had approached the Centre to seek extension of the STPI scheme to Bengal, which would have allowed the extension of benefits to Infosys in place of SEZ, but the Union information technology ministry had said it is unable to do so. sns
