KOLKATA, 20 DEC: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to look after the Dhapa dog pound on its own..
The KMC had entrusted Love and Care For Animals, an NGO, to look after the dog pound. A few days ago the KMC terminated the contract of the NGO on the grounds of “non-performance”.
Mr Atin Ghosh member, mayor-in-council (health), said the KMC would maintain the pound on its own. He said Love and Care for Animals, which used to look after the pound, should have sterilised more dogs. Three hundred stray dogs can be kept at the pound.
The KMC will soon revamp the existing shelters for the canines with a modern operation theatre, said Mr Ghosh.
The state government's cloth outlet Tantuja will give blankets to the KMC for the stray dogs that would be kept at the pound, said Mr Swapan Debnath, minister-in-charge of Micro Small and Medium Scale enterprises. A stray dog care centre will come up in Burdwan, said Mr Debnath, adding the Debasree Roy Foundation, an NGO will help to run the centre. The KMC has been looking for an excuse to terminate Love and Care for Animals after it raised its voice against the civic body for not clearing its bills. A spokesman for Love and Care for Animals opposed the charges brought by Mr Ghosh against the NGO. He said the KMC had not cleared their dues to the tune of Rs 4.75 lakh. sns
