PATNA,11 OCT: As many as 35 people, mostly women and children, were killed when aboat capsized in the Ganga river in Bihar'sBuxar district, police said today.
There were around 80 people in the boat when the tragedy happened late Sundaynear Dallupur bank, about 125 km from Patna. At least 15 people were stillmissing, a police official said. The passengers, all of them poor labourers,were returning after plucking maize.
"It appears the accident happened because of over-loading," thepolice official said. A district official said: "The boat could ferry 35people, but at the time of the accident, it had passengers more than twice itscapacity." Rescue and searchoperations were on, the official added.
The Bihar government has ordered a probe andannounced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the next of kin of each of the deceased.
