Kolkata, 16 December
The state government has decided to set up rehabilitation centres in the city for old sex workers and abandoned girl children of sex workers.
Mr Subrata Mukherjee, state panchayat minister, said a pilot project has been floated to set up rehabilitation centres for distressed sex workers. If everything goes as planned then two such centres will come up soon.
He said initially around 100 aged sex workers and 50 girls will be accommodated in the rehabilitation centres.
“Many girl children of
sex workers loiter on the roads as they have no one to look after then. These children will benefit under
the project,” said Mr Mukherjee.
The government is yet to identify areas where the rehabilitation centres will come up. Various NGOs will select aged sex workers and girls to be sent to rehabilitation centres. However, questions are being raised over what will happen to the abandoned sons of sex workers.
The state government had decided to set up a rehabilitation centre for aged and distressed sex workers somewhere in Rashbehari a few months ago. The project, however, was scrapped following objections from local people.
Mr Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, the state government’s chief whip, had intervened and informed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the problem. Miss Banerjee had assured to take necessary steps and find an alternative place to set up the centre.
Today, finally the state panchayat minister announced that two rehabilitation centres would be set up in the city.
