The state election commission has launched an Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) week today to rectify, on the spot, errors in some cards.
The week which has started today will continue till 2 February.
It was decided that permanent EPIC centres would be set up in each Assembly segment so that voters who want a correction in their EPIC can do it in a day.
Currently if an EPIC correction is needed, then voters have to wait for a month, but now the correction process will be done immediately.
Mr Sunil Gupta, CEO, of the state election commission added that officers have been engaged in those permanent EPIC centres and the voters will be able to correct their EPIC within that day, if his or her name has been enrolled in the voters list.
“If a voter does not have his or her name enrolled in the voters list, then it will take some time,” he added.
Meanwhile, the state Election Commission has decided to provide best electoral practice award to block development officers (BDO) and 11 electoral registration officers. Each award comprises of a memento and cash prize worth Rs 20,000.
The best electoral practice award has already been given to district magistrates and DM, Hooghly, Mrs Manmith Nanda.
The enrolment of the new voters ~ 18-19 years of age ~ have increased substantially. A survey carried out by the state election commission found that from 1.24 per cent new voters it has increased to 3.33 per cent.
