Siliguri/Darjeeling, 19 March: To strike the right chord in his electorate across the Hills, GJMM-supported BJP candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, SS Ahluwalia averred that the demand for Gorkhaland is within bounds of the constitutional rights of the Gorkha people. "There is nothing wrong, speaking in terms of the Constitution, to demand a separate state," he said while interacting with reporters here.
“BJP supports formation of a tiny state for good governance in the interest of the people. Which is why we supported the Centre in carving out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh," he said.
“BJP had mentioned that the party would sympathetically consider the expectations and aspirations of the Gorkha and Adivasi people in this region in its election manifesto in 2009. Our stance remains the same. But how it would figure in our manifesto this time around would be decided later," he said. Addressing the press here in Bengali, the BJP candidate scored a point. "I am no outsider. I was brought up in Asansol in Burdwan district," he affirmed.
Meanwhile, after a gap of six years, GNLF supremo Subash Ghisingh today returned to Darjeeling hills claiming that political parties were asking for his support to counter the BJP. SNS
